Football: Quaresma Joins Chelsea on loan from Inter

Inter winger Ricardo Quaresma joined Chelsea on loan until the end of the season yesterday after falling out with manager Jose Mourinho.

The 25-year-old Portuguese has played under Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari at international level and will help to fill the void left by Joe Cole, who is out for the rest of the campaign with a knee injury.

Quaresma joined Inter in the off season from FC Porto, but has so far failed to live up to expectations.

"I am disappointed with him," Mourinho said after Inter's match with Torino on Sunday. "He is a player that I wanted in Milan but unfortunately, he has not been able to overcome the criticism directed at him. Without confidence in oneself it becomes more difficult."

Quaresma came on as a substitute on Sunday but missed two good chances as Torino held Inter 1-1.

"What is Quaresma missing? I don't know. For me it is difficult to talk about the game he had, but I have to admit he didn't have a good game," Mourinho said.

The Inter manager said he was baffled by Quaresma's poor form and that it was up to the player to show why the club paid e18.6 million for his services.

"He needs to have the psychological strength to overcome the criticism that will definitely come his way. The first time he played at the San Siro he had an excellent game against Catania and scored.

"All of us thought it was the start of a great journey, but now we know that fans at the Meazza (San Siro) are demanding and Ricardo needs to have the mental strength to overcome the fear of playing."

Inter president Massimo Moratti said that a break from Italy could be what the winger needs to rediscover his best form.

"He definitely has something good, but for the moment he hasn't had the luck needed to show it. He is still young and still ours. An adventure abroad could do Quaresma some good," he told Sky Italia.
