I was shocked when I read the article “Neighbourhood left in fear after killer dog attacks” (TMIS, 1 February) regarding the dog that has killed at least four dogs, so far.

Some of your readers may remember a similar incident that happened in May 2005 when my pet Chihuahua crossbreed Sophi was brutally killed in an unprovoked attack by a trained fighting dog in Sliema.

Sophi’s case was much publicized by all local media and many people agreed that we should actually have a muzzle law here in Malta; we had actually sent a signed petition to Parliament regarding this same matter. So imagine my horror when reading this article that the owner of this dog “has ignored police warnings to keep the dog muzzled and on a leash at all times”.

Why has this irresponsible dog owner not been arrested?

Maybe the police are hoping that the dog owner will see the light? Or maybe they are hoping that one of the devastated owners of the murdered pets will take matters into their own hands? Or perhaps they are actually waiting for a child to be attacked and killed before taking action, since by the looks of it the police and the government don’t seem to place much importance on the lives of our (much loved) pets?
