In February of last year, the Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi attended the laying of the foundation stone ceremony marking the redevelopment of the present school, the Ninu Cremona Lyceum Complex in Victoria into a modern state-of-the art secondary school for boys.

Although on the foundation stone it is written “for the best education for the Gozitan children”, this new school is only for boys attending secondary education.

This is unfair and until the adjacent girls’ secondary school – The Agius De Soldanis, sees the same redevelopment, some things should be taken into consideration:

1. The underground car park and the new road connecting Europe Street to Fortunato Mizzi Street to be used by the two schools so that both schools have a more secure transport and safe bay area.

2. The open spaces, the seven-a-side football pitch including a 200-metre athletics track that will be used mainly by the new school during school hours and will also be available to the community after school hours, can also be used by the girls attending the Agius De Soldanis School where sports facilities are lacking.

3. Girls attending the Agius De Soldanis school can make use of the Chapel, resource rooms, the library and other modern educational facilities including career guidance rooms, and also share the science laboratories, technology workshops, computer labs, art rooms, food technology labs, needlework room, graphical communications rooms.

Thus, when the modern state-of-the art secondary school for boys is ready even the girls will benefit from this important project.

Maybe one day when the adjacent girls’ secondary school – The Agius De Soldanis sees the same redevelopment, those responsible for the Gozo College will decide to build an extension rather than a new school.

By doing so all students, boys and girls attending secondary education will be mixed as they are at primary, higher secondary and tertiary level.
