The recent saga of Kaka’s possible transfer from Milan to Manchester City for the exorbitant sum of 110 million pounds sterling reminded me of what football’s world governing body FIFA said way back in 1999 – 10 years ago.

FIFA plans to bring in new rules to stem the tide in the number of matches being played and stop transfer fees spiralling out of control. The secretary general of that time, Michel Zen-Ruffinen had said: “There is a risk of saturation in top-level football. Transfer fees are 10 times higher than they were a decade ago. It means we have to take some fairly drastic action”.
