Traffic Policemen

Malta Independent Saturday, 14 February 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

On the fourth day of February the words of wisdom on an English local newspaper screamed out “Traffic police break the same law they enforce”.

Seeing it written like that, no doubt the man in the street will sling mud and slam the police motorcyclists for not practising what they preach.

What a sad state of affairs when one comes to recognise the real reason why the traffic police are “breaking the law” they try so hard to enforce! A device called an earpiece has not been issued out to them thus they have to communicate through a walkie-talkie held in one hand while manoeuvring their massive machines with the other.

Does a traffic policeman have to die or kill someone because he has the “audacity” to have just a pair of hands instead of two before they are actually given this device? It seems to me that John Bundy did a great injustice to Mickey Mouse when he sang “pajjiz tal-Mickey Mouse” – those cuties at Disneyland would surely find this far more “comical” than any incident in Mickey Mouse land!
