I cannot but agree completely with Michael Grech (TMID, 28 January), regarding Dr George Abela’s nomination as President of the Republic.
Prime Minister Lawerence Gonzi is not only able to read the signs of the times. He puts the interests of the country first. He believes in democracy by also meritocracy. He lives what he preaches.
Like Mr Grech, I believe Joseph Muscat of the Labour Party, still has a lot to learn from our Prime Minister. The question is... will he ever learn?
Prime Minister Gonzi, who had no constitutional obligation to consult Joseph Muscat, in fact did consult Dr Muscat, who said he had a list of persons whom he considered as the most eligible for the post, never published the list and even avoided answering questions put to him about it by journalists.
A clear sign of a fresh/new political season? Who knows? A replica of former leader Dr Sant?
Dr Abela was undervalued and also demonised by his own party, particularly Dr Alfred Sant and Dr George Vella. He was left to the dogs.
Meritocracy, however, had its way, Dr Abela will preside over the country to the best of his ability. Those nursing grudges against him in his party will realise what they lost when after the next election, they will be left on the opposition benches. So shall it be!
