I often find Daphne Caruana Galizia’s columns interesting and entertaining. However, I must confess I found her article on Astrid Vella and the FAA extraordinarily unpleasant.

My initial reaction upon reading it was “wow, what a rant”. Your columnist has evidently taken a very personal dislike to Mrs Vella and the organisation she belongs to. Now, everyone is entitled to have an opinion and to express it freely. However, that is not an excuse for gratuitous personal attacks and for what amounts to poisonous invective. Some of the stuff Ms Caruana Galizia wrote seems somewhat hysterical as well, referring to Mrs Vella virtually simultaneously as a member of AD and a PL lover. And all this because FAA dared to openly challenge the government over a mistake. And what a mistake – tacit support for a project that would have caused chaos in Valletta and which may well have seriously damaged the co-Cathedral’s structure.

That in addition to threatening desecration of a graveyard.

Ms Caruana Galizia seems to be an exponent of traditional Maltese politics; that is to say, “if the Party you support is involved in some way in a public project, then it must, perforce, be sacrosanct and must not be criticised”. That attitude is outdated and rather immature.
