The Eucharistic Pill

Malta Independent Thursday, 26 February 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Recently I called a friend. As I was talking to him he told me how much people come to his shop and open up their hearts to him, notably women. Looking at their tears he can’t help it not to suggest to them a kind of ecstasy pill. Imagine what?

He tells them to go to the Attard adoration chapel and spend time with the Eucharistic Jesus. He even suggests them to have a good cry in front of him. His stern belief convey them the credible message that Jesus does console them from the tabernacle. In the quietness of the chapel the Divine Love reverberates its unfailing divine assistance to the frail human love.

This simple yet special man is really an apostle of Eucharistic Love. He is reminding our fellow Maltese that Jesus is the solution of our wounded frantic spirit. He is recalling to his clients that pills by themselves do not restore the spirit. Rather, without spiritual assistance, they can do very little, if not nothing, to ameliorate a broken self.

His blessed initiative calls to mind Pope John Paul II’s personal experience of praying in front of Jesus in the Eucharist. He gives his personal witness with the following words: “If in our time Christians must be distinguished above all by the “art of prayer”, how can we not feel a renewed need to spend time in spiritual converse, in silent adoration, in heartfelt love before Christ present in the Most Holy Sacrament? How often, dear brothers and sisters, have I experienced this, and drawn from it strength, consolation and support!” (Ecclesia De Eucharistia, 25). Our spirit badly craves for silent adoration before the Eucharistic Christ, that is, the Eucharist pill. Are we ready to take it to be healed?
