The Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band will reprise its acclaimed 2005 tour of Malta this spring with a week-long series of concerts at Malta’s historic churches.
During its Malta tour between 9 and 14 March, the ensemble will perform at the Gozo Cathedral, St James Cavalier, St Catherine Church in Valletta, St Julian’s Lapsi Church in St Julian’s and with the Sliema Band Club.
The Chamber Concert Band will perform works such as Carmelo Pace’s Maltesina (a musical fantasy the Maltese composer based largely on traditional folk tunes of his homeland), Robert Samut and Dun Karm Psaila’s Innu Malti (Hymn of Malta), Lino Sammut’s Sacro Cuor (the official hymn of the Sliema Band Club), Giuseppe Creatore’s March Electric, Frank Erickson’s Citadel, Cesar Franck’s Panis Angelicus and music from Hans Zimmer’s score for Gladiator.
The Chamber Concert Band is the premier concert band at Valpo, and students enrolled in a variety of academic programmes participate in the auditioned symphonic ensemble. Live performances from the Chamber Concert Band’s authentic Sousa concerts are featured on the 2006 Valpo ArtsMedia recording The Spirit of the March King. The band has also recorded the albums and they gathered on Mount Carmel, One Nation and Yankee Doodling.
The Chamber Concert Band has toured throughout the United States and internationally to Canada and Malta. Last year, the ensemble’s tour took it to major cities across the Great Plains.
