Insults Can come back and bite you

Malta Independent Sunday, 15 March 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From Mr J. A. Tyrrell

On Sunday 8 March, Daphne Caruana Galizia wrote a letter to The Malta Independent on Sunday entitled ‘The crassness of Charlotte and Peter’. In this letter Daphne tells us that she has no respect for Peter Apap Bologna. She wrote the following; “Should he wish to see the epitome of vulgarity up close, he has but to look within his own fold, where he will find a family member who lives off the proceeds of establishments where women wrap themselves naked round poles and other women dance on men’s laps.”

Daphne is obviously referring to Peter Apap Bologna’s cousin, who runs a lap-dancing club in Sliema, but Daphne can’t very well criticise Peter Apap Bologna because of what his cousin does. It is grossly unfair to try to embarrass someone because of the wrongdoing of a member of the family, as close members of Daphnia’s own family know only too well.

If Daphne were to go down that road then she would have to criticise all of the club-owner’s cousins, including her own husband, Peter Caruana Galizia, a first cousin to the businessman in question.

Daphne Caruana Galizia really needs to be more careful with these insults she publishes, as they may, like this one, come back to bite her. I also think that it is highly unethical of her to be printing personal comments of dubious veracity about her lawyer husband’s clients.
