Mosta 2

San Gwann 1

Mosta stopped a winless six-match streak beating San Gwann by the odd goal in three. Mosta fully deserved their victory against relagation haunted San Gwann who yesterday suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.

Steve Borg and Elton Vella were Mosta’s best players, as Molzahn’s boys could have won by a larger margin after hitting the posts on three occasions.

Mosta had a dream start forging ahead after 90 seconds when Steve Borg passed to Mark Brincat whose perfect lob from the edge of the area finished in the top corner of the net. San Gwann were rattled by this goal but did not lose composure. Mosta went close again with an Elton Vella scorcher that was blocked by Spiteri.

San Gwann started topush forward going close with a Zahra header and a Mario Caruana dipper. On 37 minutes San Gwann obtained the equaliser when Lee Cumbo crossed from the left and in nipped Sergio Hili to beat Debono from close range.

Mosta were very unlucky not to take the lead again just before the break when a Steve Borg powerful header slammed against the crossbar.

In the second half Mosta dictated matters in the early stages with Ryan Deguara denied by a brilliant Spiteri save. On the other end the Mosta goalkeeper had to charge out of position to block Zahra’s run. On the hour Mosta were back in the lead when Calabretta made his way inside the area and beat Spiteri who was rushing out to block the danger.

On 76 minutes Mosta almost sealed the issue when a 35-metre Mario Abela shot hit the crossbar, and three minutes later the woodwork again denied Steve Borg for the second time in the game. In the dying minutes San Gwann staged a desperate rally to save the match but to no avail.
