I read with great interest the letter written by Willie Grech, Campaign manager of Sharon Ellul Bonici (TMID, 10 March) in response to a letter by Marita Pace. Mr Grech in his response made a number of interesting remarks.

Mr Grech wrote, “If, on the other hand, Ms Pace knows that there are euro critic groups within the EU, I ask why is she ‘surprised’ with Sharon’s candidature?” and, “Well, that’s her problem. We believe in freedom of speech. We believe in criticism. That’s why we will be successful!”

Mr Grech’s comments confirm what has long been stated about Sharon Ellul Bonici, that she was, is and it seems will remain, a euro-sceptic running on the ticket of a party which, at least on paper, claims to be pro-European.

I ask, how seriously can we take a candidate who is running under the ticket of a political party that is, on paper, pro-European? How seriously can we take a candidate who addresses political conferences with the EU flag right behind her while she is sceptical about the same EU?

Mr Grech’s letter confirms how right Ms Pace was. Mr Grech’s letter confirms that Sharon Ellul Bonici, should she be elected, will be nothing more then a constant voice of anti-EU rhetoric. If countries such as the United Kingdom have time to waste with parties such as UKIP, we do not have such time.

We need people, coming from both sides of the political spectrum, who believe that what they are doing is indeed effective and to the benefit of the people rather than people who will be heading on lone handed crusade with a handful of allies to accompany.
