I would like to comment on a letter by Angelo Micallef, titled A euro-sceptic indeed (TMID, 17 March), which betrays a misconception of what EU-critical (or “eurosceptic”) really means when it is not used as a disparaging label.
Referring to a letter sent by Willie Grech, Mr Micallef wrote: “Mr Grech’s comments confirm what has long been stated about Sharon Ellul Bonici, that she was, is and it seems will remain, a euro-sceptic running on the ticket of a party which, at least on paper, claims to be pro-European.”
Let me just inform Mr Micallef that one can be “pro-European” and be critical of the EU’s political direction without deserving the label of “anti-EU”. There are many people across the EU who are critical of the Lisbon treaty precisely because they do not want the EU to be a centralised state but a loose federation.
Let me ask Mr Micallef one simple question: why do you agree with the Lisbon treaty and not with any other alternatives of European integration?
Have you considered alternative EU political structures in which Malta retains the little power it has today?
