Malta Independent Monday, 23 March 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Vodafone Malta Limited has published its second Corporate Responsibility report. The report, covering the period between April 2006 and March 2008, reviews the company’s corporate behaviour on socio-economic, ethical and environmental practices. As part of its ongoing CSR activities, Vodafone Malta Foundation has also recently organised a Foundation’s Day during which 100 company employees including staff at senior levels, dedicated their time to social activities at Mater Dei and cleaning initiative at Fra Ben area in Qawra.

“While the general public may be aware of some of our initiatives such as handset recycling, there are other activities that we carry out daily that few people know about,” said Inaki Berroeta, CEO of Vodafone Malta. “We would like such reports to serve as a tool to improve dialogue with the relevant stakeholders. This will help us to review our current efforts and set our future CR targets.”

The report is divided into seven parts, having an introduction to Vodafone’s CR objectives, relevant information on mobile phone base stations and health, statistics on Vodafone’s network rollout, Vodafone’s extension to communication access with its responsible marketing strategies, the responsible management of environment and social matters in Vodafone’s supply chain, Vodafone’s ongoing handset recycling activity and the Vodafone People Strategy, which defines the relationship between Vodafone and its people.

“This report also gives an overview of the work undertaken by the Vodafone Malta Foundation during the past years of operation,” said Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson of the Vodafone Malta Foundation. “We have invested over e641791 in our society, supporting projects in culture and heritage, the environment, education and health during these last two years. Our aim is to continue our work in order to share the benefits of development in mobile technology to promote social inclusion.”

“To keep in tune with corporate responsibility, we have decided to publish our CR report bi-annually while regular updates on the company’s activities are uploaded and accessible online so as to minimise paper use, notwithstanding the fact that we print such reports on recycled paper. We are aware of other companies upholding their corporate and social responsibilities but we still encourage more companies to become active in this area, it is the duty of every business.”

“An organisation’s behaviour is a reflection of its values. Vodafone aspires to be responsible in every level of operation, and throughout the organisation, and will continue to strive for stakeholder engagement in addressing areas that concern our society’s well-being,” concluded Mr Berroeta.

The report has been sent to a number of Vodafone Malta’s stakeholders, including health officials and NGOs.
