Reference is made to the above captioned letter written by Angelo Micallef (TMID 18 March).
Mr Micallef was commenting on a letter this office wrote in answer to another letter written by Ms Marita Pace from Naxxar. The latter was the author of a letter written on 7 March entitled, “Tell it to the marines.”
I don’t know why Mr Micallef took it upon himself to come in aid of Ms Pace. To all those who do not know Mr Micallef, this gentleman has been long pestering Sharon on her stand against Malta’s membership within the EU. It seems that he doesn’t want to understand that this issue has long been settled since the general election results of 2003.
Returning to the contents of Mr Micallef’s letter, it seems that this gentleman did not understand the gist of the whole matter. Ms Pace’s letter was based on her assumption that the Maltese voter was well informed by MIC then chaired by Dr Simon Busuttil, now an MEP himself.
Ms Pace seemed oblivious of the fact that there are critical groups within the EU. Mr Micallef himself seems not to know the answer to a question I put forward to Ms Pace on the subject. In fact, he refrained from answering the question. He is another one of those who think that only Yes men should contest the next EP election.
Mr Micallef, may I confirm to you and all EU yes men, that Sharon was, is and will continue to be a critic of the EU. She will do so because unlike the PN, she was never in any urgent need to say ‘yes’ to anything that the EU dictates. Yes she is just that, and very proud of it. Do you know why? Because, as I already mentioned in my letter to Ms Pace, many Maltese people were cheated in the run up to both the referendum and the general election of 2003.
Sharon was, is and always will be the person, elected by the people, for the people, not for any bureaucrat getting it so good. Yes, she will be in constant watch over the EU. If you call that “anti-EU rhetoric” it’s your problem. I am very confident the people will prove us right. If you want any proof, just take a look at the 2004 MEP election. In that election, the PL got three seats out of five even though it was “against EU membership”.
You also asked “how seriously can we take a candidate who is running under the ticket of a political party that is, on paper, pro-European?” Why are you so concerned that Sharon actually can make it? Are you so concerned that because the PN cheated so many people in the last five years, the Maltese electorate will actually choose anyone like Sharon Ellul-Bonici?
Mr Micallef, may I assure you that what the Maltese electorate needs and wants are people like Sharon Ellul-Bonici who are not afraid to call a spade, a spade.
