Football – Women’s Leagues: Gozitan player Emma Xuereb scores her 41st goal of the season in another runaway victory

Pembroke A. – Hamrun 5-0

Pembroke Athleta kept their hopes alive to earn a place in the play-off after beating Hamrun Spartans 5-0.

Pembroke goals were scored by Lilian Cremona and Leanne Wood, who scored a brace each, and an auto goal by Muscat.

Mgarr Utd. – Lija / Iklin 8-0

Mgarr United registered an easy 8-0 win over Lija/Iklin. These were a very important three points for Mgarr to consolidate their second place in the table, which will assure them of a play-off against Melita to earn a place in the top flight next season.

Mgarr’s scorers were Audrienne Chetcuti (3), Antoinette Sammut (2) and a goal each by Elaine Vella, Janel Bonanno and Jessica Fenech.

Gozo – Marsa 12-1

Gozo clinched another big win - 12-1 this time - against Marsa. With this win Gozo need only one point from the remaining two matches to make sure of a place in the first division next season.

The Marsa side couldn’t offer any opposition and in one of the fewest opportunities that they had to enter the Gozo defence managed to score through Kimberly Borg, this was the forth goal conceded by the Gozo team.

Gozo’s goals were scored six by their prolific scorer Emma Xuereb who brought her tally to 41 goals in 12 matches, with a very good average of 3.4 goals per match. Tracy Theuma managed to score four times, which have enabled her to join the other Gozitan player Joslene Gatt in the second place with 16 goals each. The other two were scored by Michelle Pace and Rita Azzopardi who was the lucky one to score Gozo’s 100th goal in the league. Kimberly Borg scored the only goal for the Marsa side.

Sliema R. – Hibernians 0-6

In another match Hibernians registered a good 6-0 win over Sliema Raiders.

The goals were scored by Tereza Zammit (2), Kathleen Saliba, Mandy Debono, Tessie Agius and Raissa Farrugia.

This was the 1,700 league match played since the women’s football league commenced in 1995, in which 3,597 goals have been scored.

In the first division, Birkirkara lead the standings on 24 points from 10 matches. Mosta have 22 points from 11 matches, while Hibernians are third on 19 points, also from 11 matches. Sliema are next on six and Melita have just two points.

Dorianne Theuma and Rebecca D’Agostino of Mosta lead the top scorers list with nine goals each. Rachel Cuschieri and Eleonora Agliano of Birkirkara are next on seven.

In the second division, Gozo are runaway leaders with 36 points from 12 matches. Mgarr are second on 27, St Venera third on 24, Pembroke fourth on 21. These are followed by Lija-Iklinon 13, Tarxien R. on five, Hamrun S. on 2 and Marsa on one point.

The leading scorers are Gozo’s Emma Xuereb with a massive 41 goals, Joseline Gafa and Tracy Theuma on 16.
