Wolfsburg seized the Bundesliga lead yesterday after Edin Dzeko and Grafite each scored twice within 13 minutes to give the team a 5-1 win over Bayern Munich.

Wolfsburg leapfrogged Hertha Berlin, who lost 3-1 at home against Borussia Dortmund.

"Of course I was surprised with the result. Something like this doesn't happen every day," said Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath, who guided Bayern to the 2005 and 2006 Bundesliga titles and German cup crowns.

Luca Toni had equalised for Bayern in the 45th minute to make it 1-1 at halftime, but Wolfsburg remained undefeated at home this season thanks to two quick goals by Dzeko in the 64th and 66th minute. Grafite added two more insurance goals in 74th and 77th - the second after dancing through five defenders and scoring with a backheel.

Christian Gentner had made it 1-0 just a minute before Toni's equaliser.

Wolfsburg have 51 points from 26 rounds and lead on goal difference ahead of Hamburg, who defeated Hoffenheim 1-0 behind Jonathan Pitroipa's 28th-minute goal, despite finishing with 10 men.

"We improved our situation regarding the title. But I don't think we need to really talk about the championship yet," Magath said.

Dzeko said he was also surprised by the margin of victory, but downplayed any talk of a league title.

"Most people thought Bayern would win or we would play to a draw," he said. "But nobody thought we would win 5-1. But there are still eight games left and we just want to play one game at a time and win our next game"

Bayern missed a chance to grab their first lead of the season and is now fourth with 48 points.

Coach Juergen Klinsmann was clearly disappointed with his team's performance.

"We played a really strong first half and then came back strong right away after giving up the first goal," Klinsmann said. "But then we let them play their game and that is fatal and horrible."

Klinsmann said his team had to recover quickly, as it takes on Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday.

"We were soundly beaten today and we have to accept the criticism that comes with this loss," he said. "But it's a part of sports and we have to look forward because we have an important game coming up."

Also yesterday, Stuttgart won 2-1 at Bochum to pass Hoffenheim into fifth place – the final UEFA Cup spot - while Eintracht Frankfurt beat Energie Cottbus 2-1 to pull further away from the relegation zone.
