Franco Farrugia (TMID, 24 March) has a “veterinarian surgeon based in Birkirkara as well as Freddie Fenech” to vouch for his genuine commitment to animal welfare. Strange indeed that I have never met Mr Farrugia among the hoards of genuine, well meaning volunteers working in the area of animal welfare!

Since he appointed himself as the spokesperson of “eight people all hailing from four different animal sanctuaries” I would like to point out to your readers that in my official capacity I have always been fair to the very great majority of sanctuaries’ volunteers who make great personal sacrifice to ensure that the animals under their care are well kept.

A few months ago 10 officially recognised non-governmental organisations caring for animals were allocated funds to the tune of e175,000 to finance new and real animal welfare initiatives much to the chagrin of Franco Farrugia who seems to be playing the advocate of someone feeling aggrieved for being left out.

It is my duty as Director for Animal Welfare and Service to verify claims for funding made to the government. There is nothing more despicable than making money out of the misery of animals and precisely that is the reason why all organisations relying on public donations and government funding must be transparent. Irrespective of any personal attacks by the likes of Mr Farrugia my efforts to expose individuals that run any scams will be relentless.

I would not be bothering with Franco Farrugia anymore since unlike me he seems to have plenty of spare time on his hands and relishes every opportunity to write in newspapers. Good luck but I suggest he sticks to his commendable role of shielding his fellow colleagues from infamous teacher bashers. I definitely do not need any certificate from Mr Farrugia to accredit me as an animal lover.
