I strongly believe that European Union countries should convene and come up with a real solution how to tackle this African exodus that is threatening to destabilise those countries that are worst hit by this invasion.
The reluctance shown by many EU countries to host those refugees that land on our shores is a clear sign that these countries are afraid that if they do host these boat people, then in time, they may be facing the some awkward, hopeless and desperate situation that is facing Malta now.
The EU should keep in mind that our island is just some 17 miles by eight miles with a population of over 400,000, no matter how much financial aid the EU will give to Malta, our size can’t cope with such numbers. Money will not make our island any bigger.
If the EU countries can’t, or do not want to really share this burden then Malta should act as it deems fit to protect its people. As regards the African continent, in this continent there are countries that are rich in minerals and oil, yet there are millions of people living in poverty and fear, owing to the fact that was lords and autocrats wipe out all those who might show the least sign of dissent towards them.
If the EU and the whole democratic world want to help Africa they should make a concerted effort to overthrow these tyrants.
