Malta Independent Friday, 17 April 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Some 17 members of the international yachting community in Malta were brought together by Melita Marine Group - marina operators and superyacht service providers throughout the Mediterranean - for a friendly, 18-hole tournament at the Royal Malta Golf Club (RMGC). This was the third edition of the annual Melita Marine Golf Tournament.

The tournament was sponsored by Tigné Point, Christofle, Baccarat, Bernardaud, Montes Wines of Cleland & Souchet, Ferretti Group, and Wilson of Gordon Asciak Tennis School.

Divided into four groups, the players competed in an 18-hole game. The annual tournament has become a staple entry in the Group’s diary, giving members of the yachting industry another opportunity to network over golf in an informal atmosphere of camaraderie.

For the first time as well, the tournament included a golf clinic for passionate beginners which was led by the RMGC’s resident coach Henning Schulze-Doering.

The participants were Katrine Nielsen (M/Y Indian Empress), Fiona Donaldson (S/Y Wellenreiter), Tanya Connolly (S/Y Ikra II) and Annelise Poulton (Melita Marine Group).

The awards for this year’s tournament were presented by Pierre Balzan, Melita Marine Group Chairman. The first prize, a crystal trophy, went to Philip Burke of M/Y Lionwind (photo above), with a total score of 41 points.

The longest drive was won by Captain Ian Torrance (M/Y Lionwind). Closest to the Pin went to Louis Campbell. The first runner-up was Ian Restall with a score of 33 points. The second runner-up was Travis Mclea (M/Y Shubra II) with 32 points.
