Malta Independent Saturday, 18 April 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The first day of the 16th International Swim meet, sponsored this time by Vileda, produced some fine performances from the Maltese and foreign swimmers, but above all two national and two Age-Group C records.

The girls medley relay team of Nicole Cremona (back), Melinda Sue Micallef (breast) Davina Mangion (fly) and Talisa Pace (free) improved the previous best set in March 2007 by a fifth of a second. The team then included the names of Madeleine Scerri and Angela Galea.

The boys went even better in the medley relay when they clocked 4:13.27 to knock 3.68 seconds off the previous mark set last June. The quartet was made up of Mark Sammut, Andrea Agius, Neil Agius and Steven Slee, who replaced Ryan Gambin from the previous squad.

The Age-Group records were set by the ever-improving Mark Sammut and Nikki Muscat, in the 100 metres back. Sammut swam the distance in 1:03.50 while Muscat did 1:08.91. Both records had belonged to Christian Gialanze (1993) and Gail Rizzo (1995), who presently coaches Muscat.
