The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Metro Station and Esmée Denters will perform in this year’s Isle of MTV music event in Malta. The artists will play in a free live concert at the Granaries in Floriana on 8 July. Tourism parliamentary secretary Mario de Marco announced the event at a news conference yesterday.
The Isle of MTV Malta special will form part of a week of music activities. The Malta music week will run from 3 to 8 July. Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) chief executive officer Josef Formosa Gauci said the authority will be promoting inclusive packages including flights, accommodation and tickets to the Malta Music Week with the European young population. He added that MTA is promoting the event with foreign journalists and tour operators in particular. MTA will run a prize-winning competition and shall advertise the event on MTV to unify the promotion.
Dr de Marco said that in July 2006, there were 34,000 aged up to 24 who visited Malta. In 2007 the number increased to 42,000, when the first Isle of MTV concert was held in Malta, and this went up to to 46,000 last year. Speaking about tourists visiting Malta because of last year’s Isle of MTV he said that 41 per cent of tourists who visited the islands in July were attracted by the concert.
He extended the invitation to all music lovers across Europe to come and experience what Malta is all about: music, fun, sun, sea, history and much more. 50,000 people are expected to witness Isle of MTV, one of the highlights of MTV’s European summer music scene.
“We are thrilled to be announcing a world class line up for what promises to once again be one of the summer’s must-see musical events. The Isle of MTV is unique in offering young people across Europe an exclusive opportunity to experience some of the world’s best new and established artists in the sunshine of Malta,” said Jules Robinson, Viacom Brand Solutions International senior vice-president. The hour long show will be broadcast on MTV’s pan European network in September. MTV audio visual specialists will be filming the event.
The Black Eyed Peas are world famous for their track Where is the love? and are currently one of the world’s most successful bands. Their triple platinum album, Monkey Business sold more than nine million copies and won Grammy Awards with the singles, Don’t phunk with my heart and My humps. In Malta, they will perform tracks from their fifth studio album to be released in June, The E.N.D including the single, Boom Boom Pow.
Lady Gaga needs no introduction and her return will go down well with the Maltese music scene. Her singles Poker Face and Just Dance are very popular and often played by local radio stations after she hit big with her over the top performance during last year’s Isle of MTV.
The band Metro Station, originated in Los Angeles, was an internet phenomenon and are now an MTV “push” breakthrough artist. Their first single Shake it already made it to the Top 10 across Europe.
Dutch singer and songwriter Esmée Denters started her way towards musical stardom by posting self-made videos on the internet. She collaborated with Justin Timberlake and some of the best music producers. Her music is an upbeat hybrid of different styles.
