Malta Independent Sunday, 26 April 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Maltese Revolution is a new book analysing the causes and effects of the ‘Sette Giugno’ riots written by Michael A. Sant, a senior lecturer at the History Department of the University of Malta who finished his academic research work ten years ago before passing away on May 3, 1999. This historical volume evaluates all historical contributions on the subject, airing different opinions on the riots which left four Maltese casualties as a result of the violent rioting which took place in Malta’s capital city on 7 June 1919.

The Maltese Revolution is illustrated with unique photographs depicting British soldiers brandishing rifles to contain the rioters, the victims of the ‘Sette Giugno’, the funerals which followed during the following days, Malta during the first World War at the turn of the 20 century and other photographs which have been shelved in private collections for the past years.

Michael A. Sant gives credit to all Maltese historians who kept alive this crucial events with their interpretations on the causes and effects of the rioting. The author lists the main events which triggered the British soldiers to open fire on the Maltese crowds. “Today Nationalists and Labourites, all people from different walks of life are proud that their ancestors stood up to their foreign rulers and even shed their blood in the streets of our capital city. They did so not so much for their own good, but for the future of their children and future generations”, comments the author in his foreword for the book.

Mrs Lina Sant, the author’s widow, forwarded the original handwritten text of the text to Mr Mario Cacciattolo, a close collaborator of Michael A. Sant for publication. The book will be published by SKS and will be for sale at leading booksellers at e10.
