The GWU And MUT

Malta Independent Saturday, 2 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

I have just read that the GWU is supporting the MUT in the latter’s dispute with the government! Some 25 years ago the MUT ordered its members to refuse to distribute milk or books. Or something similar. Teachers were locked out and asked to declare in writing that they would not obey the union’s legitimate directives.

What did the GWU do on that occasion? What did Mr Bencini do then? Did he strike or not? Does he still have in his possession that form which the majority of teachers did not sign? And when the MUT was humiliated and gave up, teachers were transferred en bloc and were not allowed to return to their schools before the regime decided to accept their unconditional surrender.

Labour’s past can hardly be more atrocious and I cannot imagine how there can be one single teacher, not to mention other categories of workers, supporting Labour.
