‘The Life And Times of Marie Benoît’

Malta Independent Sunday, 3 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

From Dr G. Schembri Bonaci

I am really perplexed by the low level of music criticism and comments prevalent in the Maltese pseudo cultural scene. In the last few months, instead of noting and discussing the radical new music repertoire together with opera premieres, which went unremarked, and instead of discussing the novel interpretations introduced in various works performed, one is more happy to criticise Brian Schembri’s “curly hair”, his “overwhelming” presence on stage (quotes from previous articles and letters).

Now we find Ms Benoît attacking Brian for speaking Maltese in our national Maltese theatre, even calling him a “naughty boy”.

Her ridiculous assertion that “...the Maltese present were all English speakers or they would not have been listening to Mozart and Haydn...” reflects her plebeian attitude and her vacuous level of connoisseurship that reflects her own poor state of intelligence.
