I do not agree with the editorial Bbq fever Malta (TMID, 5 May) that “it exposes all the weaknesses and inferiority complex of the Maltese people. What used to happen in Sicily more than 20 years ago is still happening today – in our own land. It is a shame, a real shame”.
Speaking for myself, I will never do what the people seen on youtube.com do. But what actually happens is that the owners of stalls of the various “Monti” and even shop owners will be the first ones in the queues to buy these items to sell again, of course, at a profit. This is not the first time that this kind of thing has happened, and as far as I know, the operators of this supermarket have imposed a maximum number of the same item that can be purchased by the same person.
Besides, have you ever seen the queues which gather outside department stores in the UK, where some people even sleep overnight outside, to be the ones who go in these stores first? With your reasoning, is this also a weakness and inferiority complex of the British people?
What used to happen in Sicily more than 20 years ago is not repeating itself today by any stretch of the imagination. The Maltese people are only taking the opportunity to buy certain things cheaper at Italian prices, because in Italy they advertise the same products for the same prices.
