Stella Maris Streetscape

Malta Independent Sunday, 10 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

As an objector to the development of houses located at 26/26A in Stella Maris Street, Sliema, I have been informed by Mepa that proposal (PA06825/07) is on the agenda of the DCC meeting of 13th May, which I can attend. However, I am not entitled to participate or make verbal representations during the sitting. That the government allows Mepa to act so undemocratically is, to say the least, beyond reason. Cowardly behaviour stinks!!

No person will or can keep his mouth shut when it is evident that proceedings are predetermined, totally biased in favour of the applicant, and when Mepa’s own policies are blatantly ignored and twisted to suit the unscrupulous applicant.

My objection is solely related to the non-respect of the Sliema 2006 Urban Height limitations, which restrict height in the section of Stella Maris Street where the said two houses are located to ground and first floor only. At the time of the March 2008 General Election, the then Mepa minister, namely George Pullicino, had blown trumpets about the revised Sliema Urban Heights limitations. I urge him to intervene with Mepa through the Prime Minister to stop the further destruction/spoiling of whatever is left of the past Sliema streetscapes.

In my heart of hearts I am convinced that, irrespective of its own policy, the DCC will sanction the application thus ruining the streetscape of Stella Maris Street forever.
