Some Bright sparks

Malta Independent Wednesday, 13 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The sixth day of June is literally round the corner and I am not going to shy away from stating that I am looking forward to it as us working folk look forward to payday.

This positive attitude of mine is due to the fact that if we have a government of a few chosen people and not the absolute majority of the Maltese because of a lack of social conscience, I am hoping that things in Brussels will be different.

I am hoping that if in Malta we have a prime minister who has about as warmth towards the minimum wage earner as the freezing temperature in Iceland, it will be an altogether different story in Brussels.

At least in Brussels we will have an able defence of the Maltese as a nation. Let us not go into the capabilities of David Casa and Simon Busuttil. In spite of coming from a Nationalist ambience, their “sticking up for the Maltese” in Brussels is as lacking as Basil Fawlty’s common sense in Fawlty Towers!

Their years in Brussels proved, beyond a shadow of doubt, that what they actually did in Brussels was sit on those warm benches like schoolchildren listening to the teacher while not sounding out their views. In a nutshell, at no point in time were they as patriotic as Mel Gibson was in The Patriot.

They actually behaved as a couple of lovesick lambs, bowing their heads to their masters as the latter came out with a huge set of rules and regulations which might have applied to large countries, but certainly did not apply to us.

Their five-year stint in Brussels was about as fruitful as Nero playing his harp while Rome was burning! If we want the gods of Brussels to sit up and take notice of what the over 400,000 people living in Malta require, we need some bright sparks over there. We need people who will not squirm and stutter when the odds are against the Maltese as a nation. Louis Grech, John Attard Montalto, Edward Scicluna, Sharon Ellul Bonici, Marlene Mizzi and the rest who are contesting the EP election on a Labour ticket – we need you.
