Rugby – U-17 Malta 7s Championship: Alligators beat Sharks to win the title

Malta Independent Thursday, 14 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Alligators Under 17’s are the Malta Rugby Football Union under 17 Malta 7’s Cup champions after a hard-fought final win over Sharks U17 at Marsa in front of a fairly-sized crowd.

Alligator’s and Malta U19 number 8 Ben Pace’s try after one minute was the first score of a tense first half before front row and fellow Malta U19 player Matthew Ward punched a hole in Sharks defence with a powerful attacking display of controlled rugby offloading to Ben Pace again who crossed the try line three minutes in to double Alligator’s lead to 10-0. Matthew Camilleri kicked the conversion to extend the league champions’ lead to 12-0.

But Sharks, who also lost to Alligators in the first round of the competition, upped the tempo and were rewarded with some good defensive play, as Sharks looked to take this, their first appearance as a club in an MRFU final, to Alligators.

Alligators dominated the closing minutes, but the tired Sharks defence played with heart all the way to the end unable to stop Alligator’s from claiming the title to complete the double of MRFU National League Champions and Malta 7’s Cup Champions.
