GWU’s Secret ballot

Malta Independent Sunday, 17 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

So the GWU is adamant in proclaiming that it has carried out a “confidential” poll for port workers, which gives it 53 per cent support.

A photo shown exclusively in this paper reveals how “secret” the ballot carried out by the GWU was. A port worker is shown about to vote in the street, as he was not allowed to go anywhere else to mark his vote.

I am not at all surprised, and expect that such an idiotic exercise is carried out by the GWU to then proclaim to all and sundry that it represents the overall majority of port workers. Everyone knows that its daily paper l-orizzont proclaims on its front page that it is an independent daily – surely the joke of the century.

What I do not expect is the reputable law firm Buttigieg and Refalo, owned by and run by Prof. Ian Refalo, to lend its name to such an exercise, which could be best described as a charade.

By law, the Director of Employment and Industrial Relations is empowered to conduct an exercise to determine who of the two belligerent unions represent the overall majority of port workers.

Let’s hope that this matter is tackled by competent people well versed in industrial relations.
