What’s Wrong about a party?

Malta Independent Wednesday, 27 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

On the eve of the last general elections two fields at Mistra valley were at the centre of much controversy. These fields are to be re-visited, this time for a party. Someone is trying to set his own agenda at a very sensitive period on the eve of another important ballot.

It seems that the venue and the timing contain the most important message of this event irrespective of whether it takes place or not. Roma locuta, causa finita (est) but not this time. Someone seems to be saying: “Hey guys, I am still around and you have to reckon with me!”

I do not wish to over-inflate this message. In a normal setting such a challenge would easily be rubbished. But regretfully the setting is not normal. We are in the middle of an economic crisis. We need a determined and stable government and we have got one backed by a one-seat majority. It is a time where hard decisions need to be taken since the ‘party’ is over.

The invitation for the Mistra party is indicating that the time for the next general elections could be much shorter than expected. There is the readiness for high risk. The main actors know what is at stake. Up to now some of them have managed to downplay the situation. But not all are happy with the status quo. It is not the first time that a party in government has lost its majority in Parliament.
