The Malta Communications Authority’s market review for the period between July 2008 and December 2008 has re-confirmed Melita as the leading provider of home entertainment and broadband internet services throughout Malta and Gozo.
“Statistics released by the MCA have once again confirmed that Melita is the preferred provider for television and broadband internet services. The MCA statistics have also confirmed the fast growth rate of Melita’s fixed telephony services. We thank our customers for trusting Melita and for trusting us as their preferred home entertainment and communications provider,” said Melita’s chief executive officer, Stephen Wright.
Melita Mobile was not yet in operation during the period under review.
The market review shows that Melita has retained its position as Malta’s leading broadband internet provider in Malta.
As at December 2008, Melita’s broadband cable internet products enjoyed a 52 per cent market share with over 52,000 families and businesses connected to Melita’s fast and reliable cable internet service.
The market review has also confirmed that Melita’s fixed-line telephony is continuing to grow steadily. At the end of 2008, around 55,000 fixed lines were connected to Malta’s cheapest fixed-line telephone network, representing a market share of more than 21 per cent for Melita – eight per cent increase over 2007. During the same period, GO’s fixed lines continued to decrease sharply by more than eight per cent.
Melita is also the provider of choice for television services with 75 per cent of the market subscribed to Melita’s television packages. Melita’s digital television subscriptions continued to increase steadily and by the end of 2008, stood at over 48,000 subscriptions.
Melita continues to invest heavily in purchasing broadcasting rights for the best and latest TV content including the best sports events such as UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup and Barclays Premier League as well as the latest movies and international hit-series such as Knight Rider, True Blood, Prison Break and 24. Melita holds broadcasting rights for UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup until 2012.
