Illegal Parking

Malta Independent Saturday, 30 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

In view of your report Wardens parked on double yellow lines (TMID, 28 May) the Guard & Warden Service House Ltd would like to clarify that it is not acceptable for local wardens to park illegally to be able to patrol any area.

No local warden is above the law and, if for any reason whatsoever, wardens are found to have committed an offense, appropriate action is taken both internally and by the national authorities.

If a local warden needs to stop to issue a traffic contravention as soon as this is noticed, this is permissible only if no other parking space is available and the warden’s vehicle does not cause obstruction or danger to others. Those in pairs who are on patrol must drive on after dropping off their colleague.

If the warden notices any other vehicle parked illegally with the hazard lights switched on and the driver sitting in the driver’s seat, that person will be asked to drive away. If, after repeated warning, the driver is still parked illegally, s/he is liable to be booked.

The reason little could be done when the Guard & Warden Service House Ltd were contacted was because the wrong vehicle registration number was given. The person who took the call was not asked to give information in an official capacity and was only replying to a complaint from the public about the warden’s behaviour.

It is a priority for the Guard & Warden Service House Ltd to take a disciplined approach in these matters and to listen to all complains made by the public. In addition, the local councils who contract the company to provide the service are also informed.
