Malta Independent Wednesday, 10 June 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Lynx Flight of the Royal Navy Type 22 Frigate, HMS Cumberland, had an unusual sortie last Wednesday, when it landed at Malta International Airport to pick up two cadets accompanied by the Officer-in-Charge and the chairman of the Malta GC Unit to ferry them back to the ship for subsequent entry in to Grand Harbour .

The Flight Commander, Lieutenant Marty van Duin, Royal Navy, and his Flight Observer, Lieutenant Martin Ormshaw, Royal Navy, met the four-man contingent from the Malta GC Unit at MIA airport early last Wednesday morning.

After a thorough briefing and kitting out by the Flight Observer, Marine Corporal Rebecca Cavlin, Ordinary Cadet Dylan Cassar, Lieutenant (SCC) Donald Montebello RMR (Unit OC) and Lieutenant (SCC) James Davis RNR (retd) (Unit chairman) boarded the Lynx Mk 8 to fly off to ‘mother’ – HMS Cumberland while still on her way towards Malta.

When the frigate finally came alongside Pinto Wharf, two other cadets on shore piped the ship in salute to her and her company.
