Not An issue of waste

Malta Independent Friday, 12 June 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

With reference to Colin Casey’s letter of (TMID, 6 June) Malta International Airport (MIA) reiterates:

The €25 million investment afforded for the expansion and improvements of its infrastructure is a far cry from a waste. No doubt it must be noted that as a private commercial company MIA remains in duty bound to look after the interests of its shareholders who have entrusted it with their investments. With this investment the non-Schengen extension project was materialised, the runway was resurfaced, the taxi ways were upgraded, new flood lighting of the apron was installed, the security lanes were doubled, both the departures and welcomers halls were modified for the better comfort of clients, the baggage reclaim was extended to contain additional carousels. These modifications were necessary not only in view to compliance with EU regulations, but equally for the convenience of passengers to facilitate easier flows and therefore less waiting time also for Ryanair clients. This also goes to show that the safety of passengers and efficiency of service holds high priority at MIA.

Indeed MIA appreciates the growth registered by Ryanair and is set on pursuing its policy of supporting the introduction of new routes particularly from under-served areas as in the case of Spain and Scandinavia. To this end, other stakeholders are encouraged to join forces and follow suit in this effort to assist the tourism industry in Malta. MIA once again reiterates that it contributes tangibly and effectively to the tourism industry as well as to the Maltese economy and once again we recall to attention the one million euros disbursed last year entirely on incentives to attract the operation of such new routes.
