An Ugly carbuncle at Dwejra

Malta Independent Sunday, 21 June 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

It seems the Dwejra interpretation centre has once more raised its ugly head. Not that its ugly head had gone anywhere of course, as it has been on full public display for years now, spoiling what is otherwise a beautiful natural area.

According to Mepa case number PA/02418/09, the description of work reads, “To amend drawings of interpretation centre at l-Pjazza tad-Dwejra including educational literature, office, audio visual room and restaurant.”

And exactly what difference are any amendments going to make to the fact that this is still going to be an ugly carbuncle on the face of an area which has just reached 14th position in the worldwide competition to declare the New Seven Wonders of Nature?

When is it going to get through to the Maltese government that jewels like Dwejra and Hondoq need protection from development? It is the very unspoilt nature of these areas that draws the visitors. This is not something that is being done for the benefit of the island; it is nothing more than a moneymaking venture on the part of owner Godwin Cassar.
