Waterpolo – BOV Summer League: Neptunes Outclass neighbours in Balluta derby

Malta Independent Wednesday, 8 July 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Neptunes returned to form with a bang, after two lacklustre encounters, and the league leaders were brought down to earth, when they had to bow to a superior force. Neptunes dominated from the start, with the Saints making a rally at the end of the opening session, but the next two quarters decided the outcome of the match, as Neptunes exploited the defensive frailties of their opponents, with Sean Gravina given too much space as the Saints' attentions were on other players.

Trouble reared its head in the third period, when Italian referee Massimo Monnis, stopped the game for some time, when objects were thrown in his direction. In the last session the San Giljan Serbian player, Boris Popovic, lost his cool, in an altercation with Neptunes' Steve Camilleri, and Popovic was sent off with no substitution, for four minutes. It did not really matter, as Neptunes by then had already a winning margin to rest on.

Neptunes raced into a 4-1 lead at the start, with goals by Leo Sottani, Gravina, Camilleri and Edward Cachia, before the Saints pulled a couple of goals back by the end of the session, through Paul Fava and Johb Xerri de Caro. In the second period Neptunes increased their advantage once more, as Gravina, twice, and Aljosa Kunac found the net. Vasovic reduced the arrears twice for San Giljan, but in between Neptunes were still scoring, with Camilleri and Kunac.

After the break there was no let off for the Saints, as Neptunes were still putting them in, when Camilleri, Gravina, Sottani and Michele Stellini took their side away from their adversaries. Then came the stoppage, with San Giljan converting two penalties soon after, through Popovic. Karl Galea grabbed a further goal for Neptunes, for a commanding 14-7 lead, at the start of the last quarter. Galea scored his second for Neptunes and Vasovic replied for the Saints. Popovic was then sent off, and Neptunes could increase their lead, with more goals by Camilleri and Sottani. Vasovic scored his fifth, and last, goal for the losers, but there was more to come, although the result was beyond any doubt. Nicky Lanzon and Timmy Agius netted for Neptunes, and Xerri de Caro and Fava replied for San Giljan.
