I was tuned in on Net Television last Thursday evening and they had a feature on the preparations for the concert to be given by Michael Bolton and Joseph Calleja at the Luxol Grounds.
The journalist doing the feature introduced Gillian Zammit as a “Maltese”, and for a second I wondered why. Then, when I heard her speak, I realised why he felt compelled to do so.
Gillian spoke in English all the time, without a hint of Maltese in her interview. I was shocked that someone of such a stature could not bring herself to speak a few words in Maltese, but found it more comfortable to talk in English.
On the other hand, I was pleased to hear Joseph Calleja speak in perfect Maltese. He has not forgotten our language in spite of living abroad for most of the time.
