Biased Comment

Malta Independent Sunday, 19 July 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

I was stunned by Stephen Calleja’s article entitled “Teachers should go on strike in summer”(TMIS, 12 July). I know many teachers who are regular readers of your newspapers and I was one of them until today.

The MUT has decided to reproduce this article on its webpage for those who don’t read your newspapers so that teachers in Malta, and worldwide, would read this article and decide for themselves the level of journalism we sometimes witness in this country.

Mr Calleja has all the right to ridicule the teachers and their union. In his article, he even attempts to put the teaching profession and the MUT into disrepute. I leave it up to your readers (you will surely have less teachers bothering to buy your newspapers and I am one of them) to assess this article.

You know very well that the MUT has always cooperated with your newspapers and your journalists, and our officials, including myself, have always been more than willing to be of assistance to you. I have been reading articles and news items about the MUT and the teaching profession in our local media for many years, but I have to say that I have never read such a biased and prejudiced article such as the one by Stephen Calleja.

I am sure that Mr Calleja’s parents, who were both teachers, also have something to write about!!
