I refer to Carmel Cilia's letter with the heading 'Don't bring old times back' (TMI, 24 July).

First of all, it is erroneous to state that the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) "pulled out of the water and electricity tariffs discussions". It is simple - CMTU and the Malta Workers' Union (UHM) had approached the issue differently. Also, CMTU has been very clear and consistent. My comments to The Malta Independent reflect the truth of the present economic situation. CMTU wants to safeguard the worker and his family by working intelligently for the immediate term, thus enhancing the possibility of securing good levels of sustainability, growth and jobs for the long term, and the well-being of society, which means protecting the business as well.

In fact, my comments are more of an appeal to all stakeholders who are expected to make the necessary efforts by being cautious and to do what is right. Due to the present economic environment, it is more than imperative to focus on converging effective ideas for the benefit of the vulnerable categories of society, especially when debating national issues because being responsible and accountable will be key factors in the taking of decisions to determine our future.

Reaching consensus is part of the process of democracy.
