Malta Activities Limited currently delivers safe and exciting rock climbing activities in Malta and Gozo, using the natural rock available, and through the use of a state-of-the-art mobile rock climbing tower. In recent years, rock climbing has gone from extreme to mainstream. Every year, more and more people are trying this fun, adventurous sport. Malta Activities now plans to take advantage of this rapid growth by opening the first and only dedicated climbing centre in Malta with funding for the project coming from the UK.
The primary mission of the centre is to provide visitors of all ages with an internationally recognised and state-of-the-art rock climbing facility in which to exercise, socialise, and learn new climbing skills. By focusing on these fundamental qualities, the friendly and knowledgeable staff will create an environment that is welcoming to those wanting to try climbing for the first time as well as the experienced climber, whilst also promoting health to the Maltese population, and contributing positively to the Maltese economy.
The centre will focus on providing a fun, safe environment for both new and experienced climbers to improve their climbing skills. Persons of all ages will be welcome to climb at the centre with children’s classes running weekly to encourage youngsters to take up the sport.
Due to the very high demand for a rock climbing centre, publicised by both past participants, Malta Activities hopes to open Malta’s first dedicated facility by the end of this year. “Everything is in place,” said managing director Matthew Perrott. “The building has been purposely constructed to the best specifications for a climbing centre of this kind and the climbing walls will be built by one of the UK’s most renowned climbing wall builders, Mr Andrew Long. He is very excited about Malta’s potential and is amazed by the quality of the natural rock available here. Mr Long has visited Malta and will be here again this week to finalise the designs. Once completed, we will be filing an application for a class 9 permit to Mepa for their approval and once this is received, we will be able to open our doors.”
Climbing has gone from something done by only a select few to an activity enjoyed by tens of thousands across the country. Climbing walls are finding their way into public schools and universities, parks, and even on cruise ships. Advertisements featuring climbers have become more and more prevalent. All of this has led to climbing becoming more of a mainstream activity. The number of climbing centres in Europe continues to grow as more and more people seek the thrill of climbing in a safe environment. The popularity of indoor climbing has far from peaked. This can be seen in part by the increase in both the number and organisation of climbing competitions. There is even an international movement to make climbing an Olympic sport. Malta Olympic committee are supporting this new project and the centre will house walls that can be used for international competitions. These competitions will boost Malta’s recognition as a European climbing destination.
As the only centre of its kind in the country, it will offer bouldering, top-rope, and lead climbing. In addition, Malta Activities Limited will employ and train local people to become qualified staff and who will then provide instruction to climbers of every ability level. There will be nine permanent jobs created in the first year alone.
A major feature of the centre will be its ability to draw in different groups by providing a unique environment in which to have a party, meeting, or team-building exercise. The centre will be a great asset to the language schools and DMC’s on the island when tendering for European work. The company will also be able to take the climber outdoors into the natural environment, and also take the climbing facility to the climber
by means of the mobile climbing tower.
This site was chosen due to its location at the heart of the rezoned recreational area of the country. With the ongoing support of the landlord, the warehouse was designed by Mario Cassar BE&A, MSC, A&CE to accommodate the requirements of the business in respect of the climbing walls and Malta’s first dedicated purpose built IRATA training area for use by the construction industry. In addition, the warehouse is newly built and has an open floor plan with mezzanine, changing rooms, conference facilities, office, showers and toilets.
