Following the first Players’ Meeting of season 2009-2010, Lija Athletic F.C. presented the official new players, together with the official main sponsors, at the recently refurbished Lija Athletic Football Club.

The new players playing for Lija’s team this season will be: (standing starting from left), Antoine Sacco, Keith Darmanin, Tonio Saliba, Edgar DeGabriele, Heathcliff Schembri, Luke Attard and Luka Desira Buttigieg.

Apart from the mentioned players, further agreements have been met with more players and their respective clubs, after the above photo was taken.

The main sponsors are once again Falzon Group and Company. Gardenia Stores and Esso (D. Formosa Ltd.) are other club sponsors. Further negotiations are being made with Mr. Gordon Micallef and Colin Ciantar for another possible sponsorship.

During this meeting, awards were presented for the outgoing season (2008-2009) with the winners being:

Footballer of the Year: Luke Bonnici

Best Youth Player: Joswel Caruana

Most Dedicated Player: Michael Mangion

The main goal of Lija Athletic F.C.’s committee this season is to win promotion to the First Division on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the set-up of the Club; a most memorable and unforgettable anniversary celebrated earlier this year on 15 February 2009.

It is important to note that last year, Lija Athletic failed to be promoted to the First Division just by two points, finishing third in the Second Division classification.

Marco Gerada has been confirmed as the team’s coach. He will be assisted by Edgar DeGabriele and Lorry Borg.

The President of the Club, Charles Scerri, on behalf of the committee, thanked all the sponsors and all other beneficiaries who provide their help and assistance throughout the year.
