Cyclists On roads

Malta Independent Tuesday, 18 August 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Without going into the merits of the recent death of a cyclist, I do believe that something needs to be done to make roads safer for cyclists.

I am not a bike-rider myself, but I have encountered many cyclists on our roads, and I am always extra careful when I see them riding on the side of the road. The fact that most of our roads do not have a bicycle lane makes it even more difficult for them.

And, it is crazy to have bicycle lanes that end up nowhere. What are the cyclists supposed to do? Turn back?

At a time when we are talking about creating a better environment, a greater effort needs to be made to reduce the number of cars on our roads. This can only be done if we get more people to use bikes. And to get more people to use bikes, we must provide them with roads that are adequate for cycling.
