Cricket: Captain’s XI Leads Chairman’s XI 3-1

On Saturday the fourth game of the Captain’s XI v Chairman’s XI was played.

The chairman’s team bated first with Malcolm Crabbe and Firoz opening the batting. They put on a 48-run partnership before Crabbe was caught at mid-wicket for 14 runs. Firoz was next out after a further five runs were made scoring 22 runs.

Then came a huge partnership of a 115 runs from Tosif and Andy Naudi. Tosif was bowled just after reaching his half century including five fours and a six. Naudi went on too make 71 runs including 12 boundaries.

At this stage the Chairman’s team were set for a big total. The bowling of Angelo Spiteri and Mike Caruana put a stop to the run feast. Caruana took three wickets for 22 runs from eight overs while Spiteri took two wickets for 26 runs from seven and a half overs.

The Chairman’s team were bowled out in the 47th over. John Grima remained 19 runs not out while Saarfraz Ali had made 22 runs. Kevin Krishna for the Captain’s XI had also taken two wickets.

For the Captain’s team, John Callus and Chris Naudi opened the batting. Together they put on a solid start of 99 runs before Naudi was bowled for 20 runs.

Callus was then involved in another partnership of 83 runs, this time with Angelo Spiteri who made 49 runs before being caught including seven fours.

A couple of quick wickets fell - that of George Agius (eight runs) and Javed Shah (four runs) which gave the Chairman’s team a little ray of hope.

Mike Caruana was in next and helped Callus finish off the run chase. Callus, who batted very well, ended with a 121 runs not out including 12 fours. Caruana ended with ten runs not out. For the Chairman’s team Andy Lenard was the main wicket taker with two.

The Captain’s team now leads this year’s series three to one.

Next Saturday will be the fifth game of the series starting at 10am.
