Waterpolo – Bank Of Valletta KO: Another routine win lands Sliema in final

Malta Independent Thursday, 20 August 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

It was another routine victory by the champions, not in the same intensity as last week's championship win, but it was enough to guarantee another win over Sirens, their fourth this season. Sliema opted to play Otto Frikk vice Bogdan Rath, and he responded with two strikes from an angle.

Sirens played a game of containment, but it only worked at first, and in the middle two sessions the champions went on full throttle, and eased away from their opponents, to take a winning advantage. In the last two session then Sliema bench players then went in the water, to also notch their name on the score sheet. Sirens failed to find the opposing net from the three man ups in their favour, and the champions scored four times from six extra player occasions.

Sliema opened their account with a John Soler penalty, but Ryan Mock equalised for Sirens, in the opening session. Sliema then had Otto Frikk, Clint Debono and John Brownrigg to push them ahead, with Sirens reducing the arrears with an Attila Baranji goal, for a 4-2 Sliema lead at the interval.

Sirens fell further behind in the third quarter, as Tamas Marcz replied for them, after a further Frikk strike, but Sliema went on to notch more goals, through Soler, Mark Meli and Brownrigg again.

In the final period Soler obtained his hat trick, but Sirens managed to make their presence felt, as they put in three goals in a row, with two Clint Mercieca strikes, one from a penalty, and David Cutajar. Sliema then closed down the match, with more goals from Nicky Lubrano and Michael Rizzo, and a more comfortable lead.

Sliema now await today's other semi-final, between San Giljan and Neptunes, to know who their opponents will be in next Sunday's final.

Exiles denied double

2 Division Semi Final

Marsascala 8

Exiles Jet Services7

(3-2)(0-2)(3-2)(2-1)

M'scala denied Exiles the chance of a double, and also managed to avenge the two defeats they suffered in the league campaign, which had them chasing Exiles for the whole season.

It was a good tactical game for Anthony Farrugia's lads, as they managed to keep in the match, and this time Exiles couldn't break away, as they did before. Exiles included Seb Cini instead of Karl Enriquez.

Despite the win M'scala were not so hot in their man-up situation, as they only managed to score just once from five occasions. Exiles weren't that much better, with two goals, also from five man ups.

M'scla had Joe Cremona with an early hat trick, as they led 3-2 after the opening session, with Exiles coming back, but also missing a penalty, as Ian Bugeja saved Cousin's throw, with the aid of the crossbar. Exiles turned the score around in the second session, and at the interval they were ahead, on a slim 4-3 score.

In the third session M'scla prevailed, even after going a couple of goals behind, but Gabor Suri's brace brought them back on level terms, at 6-6. In the final quarter, with both sides very wary of each other, Exiles replied to M'scala's goal, but when Botond Szabo fired in his goal, although there was still time, Exiles saw their efforts thwarted, as M'scala hung on with grim determination, to book their place in next Sunday's final, when they will meet Marsaxlokk.
