I write with regard to your recent stories about animal neglect.

“Praise the Lord” are the only words which immediately come to mind to finally see reports of how disgracefully Maltese people treat animals.

The animal welfare department has a long way to go on a journey which will wrench their hearts and souls apart, but alongside the honest genuine and caring citizens who are not afraid to call and lodge a complaint (against maybe a neighbour, friend or even family member, when witness to atrocities, general neglect, welfare and cruelty which is happening every day) reporting the perpetrators indicates progress to stamping out cruelty.

For a country steeped in tradition, where people still attend mass regularly, and or live by the teachings of the Holy Bible, the word “hypocrite” would be best suited.

God created this planet for us all to respect love and care for each other! If you have no respect for animals how do you pray and offer your heart to Jesus and Our Lord? Maybe you are a non believer, but surely you have a moral structure, self-respect and a heart?

Oh I guess not! I have witnessed many crimes against animals not just in Malta!

If attitudes are to change then education is required to appreciate these wonderful creatures who give unconditional love.

My prayers this Sunday will be dedicated to give strength and determination to all persons connected with the animal welfare department, judges and lawyers who view and prosecute these cases to enforce the law and give judgment.

Then maybe some respect for our animals will be had. We know their jobs are hard as this is a society which naturally does not comply with laws and believes they are there to be challenged and broken. May the intervention and strategies, outlined by the EU and the updating of the laws regarding animal welfare be the start of a new generation.

Get a conscience Malta and do something positive, protect and appreciate these wonderful creatures.

And for all those residents who are trying so very, very hard to fight for and give continual support to the organisations who have the endless job of providing a better life for so many stray dogs and cats, I must say thank you. You are truly the saviours who carry out fantastic work, so much of which goes unseen. May God bless you with fortitude, may your prayers be heard.

Please do not feed the puppy industry and buy the latest in breed. Visit a local rescue centre and find a new friend who will love you unconditionally!
