I was watching a television programme lately, which recounted the legend of Girgor Buttigieg and how he used a donkey to find a site on which to build the church.

Today, it was another donkey that chose the site for the new Nadur cemetery. Other donkeys gave leverage and still more donkeys gave the go ahead for the project.

The donkey used by Girgor Buttigieg 300 years ago was wise and guided by the Almighty.

The same cannot be said for the present day donkeys.

You have to be an ass to build a cemetery on the road leading to Ramla Bay, a part of Gozo that is still unspoilt.

You have to be an even greater ass to do so on top of a natural spring that supplies 10,000 gallons a day of crystal clear cool water which only contains the nitrate level a little above that of potable water, especially when the Water Services Corporation did not give its go ahead for a cemetery near one of its bore holes.

Asses and donkeys! But I suspect more...
