Maltese drivers are no better or worse than any other drivers in the world. Some drivers tend to speed up and take over other cars no matter what, sometimes without thinking of what might happen. The sad part is that it’s the innocent party that suffers the most. Speed cameras don’t do justice, as drivers know exactly where they are stationed, so they slow down and then speed up again after they pass the cameras.

If Anton Buttigieg Road in Zejtun is so bad (TMID, 28 August), why isn’t it patrolled better? It seems that accidents like the one that took place last week create a lot of attention but then all is forgotten in a couple of weeks.

As mentioned in the media a lot of accidents occur on this stretch of road and yet nobody does anything about it until it’s too late. You can see the same thing happening on the road between Marfa and Cirkewwa, with drivers speeding either to catch the ferry, or coming out off the ferry, and drivers try to see who is the first to get to the Mellieha Bypass.

The Coast Road at Bahar ic-Caghaq and Salini is another one. As I mentioned many times before, roads in Malta should be turned into four lanes, two going and two coming to avoid head on collisions, wherever and whenever possible.

Motorcycle policemen used to control the traffic better than cameras do. With the amount of traffic on the roads, more motorcycle police are needed especially to patrol dangerous roads like the ones mentioned above. Unlike speed cameras, or sleeping policemen, motorcycle police can merge with the traffic and can be stationed in different places as needed.

Usually their presence alone is enough to slow down traffic. To Zejtun Mayor Joe Attard, the motorcycle police presence might be a quick way to slow down traffic on this dangerous road until other arrangements could be made.
