Malta Independent Monday, 31 August 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Senglea Nursery organised its annual end of season presentation ceremony for the season 2008/2009 for all its players recently.

Present for this occasion were all Senglea Nursery’s players, the participants in the Summer Activities programme, relatives and friends. Also present were various distinguished guests, among them the YFA President, Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro, Senglea Mayor, Mr. Casha, Senglea’s Archpriest, Rev. Grech and presidents and secretaries of all Senglea’s societies. A large crowd also gathered around the venue to watch the show.

The Senglea Nursery President, Stephen Spiteri, explained the role that Senglea Nursery has in Senglea’s community. Hje said that its aim was to gather all Senglea’s children and youngsters together in order to enjoy themselves in a safe and protected ambience.

For this reason, many activities organised by this nursery are open to all those wishing to participate and not only for those within the nursery. In summer, Senglea Nursery organises a six-week Summer Activities programme with indoor, outdoor and swimming competitions. All these activities are open to all those wishing to participate and are free of charge.

Spiteri added that this year, apart from the competitive games, these youngsters had the opportunity to train in the traditional bocci game, the traditional rowing, the regatta and could also learn a band instrument.

Spiteri proudly mentioned the over 70 participants who took part in these Summer Activities, which were organised for the second consecutive year and which last year were rewarded by the YFA and UEFA.

Spiteri thanked last season’s players for their enthusiasm and dedication, which helped to obtain positive results. The Nursery is hoping to improve upon them in the new season.

Spiteri mentioned Senglea’s new women’s team, which has been training throughout summer in order to be competitive the coming season.

He also mentioned his plans for a Waterpolo team to come into being. This project will take flight as soon as all the necessary permits are ready.

Sadly, Spiteri remembered Dylan Bugeja, an Under 17 player who died at such a tender age and that left such sorrow within the Nursery. He was a Senglea Nursery player who will never be forgotten.

Fr Hilary also addressed those present showering praise for the nursery. He admired the professionalism in running it and how it is collaborating with various other entities, including the church and the local council, in order to come up with the best results for these youths.

After the speeches all Senglea Nursery’s players and all the participants in the Summer Activities were rewarded for their efforts.

Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro presented a trophy, given by Senglea Nursery, to Dylan Bugeja’s parents as a sign of respect, due to the fact that even Dylan formed part of this nursery last season. Dylan’s parents were greeted by a heartbreaking applause.
