Waterpolo – Euro B Championship: Defeat Against Great Britain complicates matters for Malta

Malta Independent Wednesday, 9 September 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

After three consecutive wins, Malta’s national waterpolo team yesterday succumbed to its first defeat in the Euro B Championships being held in Lugano, Switzerland, against Great Britain.

Malta lost 11-6 and the results of each session, Great Britain first, were the following: 4-0, 2-2, 2-0 and 3-4.

As can be seen, Malta had a disastrous first session which paved the way for Britain’s win.

This disappointing defeat complicates matters for Malta and puts a place in the top three of the Group in jeopardy.

Malta must win today’s match against the Netherlands, moreso because Georgia seem to have little trouble beating Switzerland.

With a loss Malta looks to end in fourth place in the Group and therefore will not play on Friday but on Saturday against the winner of QF3.

The opponents are most likely to be Ukraine or Switzerland. That gives Malta only a chance of finishing in 7th or 8th place.

This is hardly encouraging, especially after Malta beat Switzerland 6-4, Poland 8-7 and Georgia 12-10 in the previous three matches.

A win today will surely change Malta’s course towards a more exciting ending in these Championships.
